When the clock strikes midnight on 31 December, everyone sets resolutions for the New Year. Some decide to improve their finances, whereas others learn a new skill. However, one resolution that is on the list of at least half of Americans is staying fit.
A survey conducted by Forbes in 2023 disclosed that 48% of respondents’ priority in 2024 was to improve fitness. For about 34% of people, losing weight was a top resolution. However, only a few stick to their resolution; many set and forget them.
Research shows that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by the second month of the year. Gyms witness a decrease in traffic after January and February.
Did you fail to stick to your New Year’s resolution like others? Well, no worries! You can prioritize your fitness now—after all, it’s never too late to lose weight or get in shape.
However, before you hit the gym, you must have the right activewear. There are a few key pieces that every fitness enthusiast should have in their closet. We’ll explore them in this article.
#1. Sports Bra
Physical activity such as jumping and running causes breasts to bounce up and down, resulting in pain and discomfort. Research shows that up to 72% of females experience pain in their breasts while running. Hence, a sports bra is a must-have in your closet.
Unlike regular bras, a sports bra can help prevent your breasts from bouncing when you’re working out. It will offer excellent support, making it easier for you to perform high-intensity or high-impact activities.
When buying sports bras, look for brands that sell PFAS-free clothing. PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. An article published in CBS News revealed that PFAS has been found in an array of garments, including sports bras. Popular brands like Athleta and Lululemon were found to manufacture PFAS-containing sports bras.
This is concerning since PFAS, or forever chemicals, are carcinogenic. NIH’s recent publication links PFAS exposure with kidney, testicular, and prostate cancer.
In the past decade, these chemicals have contaminated America’s water supply, leading to various lawsuits. For example, some of these chemicals get into water through the aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), used to put out flammable liquid fires, such as those involving gasoline. Several states have filed AFFF lawsuits against the manufacturers of PFAS-containing firefighting foams.
One suit has been filed by Kathleen Jennings, an attorney general of Delaware, for contaminating the natural resources of the state. In her lawsuit, she seeks damages, including the price of restoring harmed natural resources and support for state-run public health programs. Notable defendants in the lawsuit, TruLaw remarks, include 3M, DuPont, The Chemours Company, and Tyco Fire Products.
To be on the safe side, look for sports bras that are free from PFAS. Checking their labels will help you figure out if they contain forever chemicals.
#2. Flexible Leggings or Shorts
A pair of high-quality leggings or shorts is a staple in any fitness wardrobe.
If you decide to purchase leggings, look for those made of stretchy, breathable fabric. Such leggings are super comfortable and allow for a full range of motion. This flexibility is important for activities like yoga, Pilates, or high-intensity interval training (HIIT), where unrestricted movement is necessary.
Try opting for leggings with flatlock seams to prevent irritation and chafing. Also, make sure they feature a wide, high-rise waistband so that they stay in place during vigorous movements. Some leggings also feature pockets. Go for them, for they are perfect for carrying small essentials like keys or a phone.
For those who prefer shorts, compression shorts would be an excellent option. Compression technology can improve blood flow, reduce muscle fatigue, and accelerate recovery times. For cycling or running, go for shorts with built-in liners. They offer added support and coverage.
#3. Breathable Socks
Often overlooked, a good pair of socks can make a huge difference in your workout experience.
Socks made of merino wool or polyester are worthwhile options. They effectively draw sweat away from your skin, which means they will keep your feet dry. This will reduce your risk of blisters.
If you want to keep your feet cool during intense workouts, buy socks with mesh ventilation panels. They will let air circulate and get rid of sweat quickly. For added stability, choose ones with arch support bands. These offer excellent support to the feet while reducing foot fatigue.
Another important feature to consider when choosing socks is its seamlessness construction. Unlike regular socks, they prevent chafing, so you can work out for long hours without any irritation or discomfort.
All things considered, having these items in your wardrobe can significantly enhance your workout experience. Whether it’s a long run, high-intensity interval session, or a relaxing yoga class, these items will keep you comfortable and offer excellent support. Not only that, but they will enhance your performance and keep you motivated on your fitness journey.
